Mitzpe Ramon & Ramon Crater Travel Guide

Things to Do, Where to Stay, How to Get There & Practical Tips

Last updated: August 2026 by Moshe Barak — Israel travel and transportation expert with more than 20 years of experience helping international travelers navigate Israel.

Perched on the edge of one of Israel’s most extraordinary landscapes, Mitzpe Ramon is a small desert town overlooking Makhtesh Ramon, usually known in English as Ramon Crater.

Despite the name, Ramon Crater was not created by a meteorite or volcanic eruption. It is a makhtesh – a vast erosion formation created over millions of years. At approximately 40 km long, it is the largest makhtesh in the world.

For travelers planning a trip to Israel, Mitzpe Ramon offers something very different from Jerusalem, Tel Aviv or the Dead Sea. The landscape is wide, quiet and almost otherworldly, with desert viewpoints, geological formations, hiking trails, jeep tours and some of the darkest night skies in Israel.

You can see the main highlights in a day, but staying overnight is highly recommended. Sunset, sunrise and stargazing are some of the best reasons to come here in the first place.

What Is Makhtesh Ramon?

The first thing to understand is that Mitzpe Ramon and Ramon Crater are not the same place.

Mitzpe Ramon is the town built along the northern rim of the crater. Makhtesh Ramon is the enormous geological formation stretching through the desert below it.

A makhtesh is sometimes described as an erosion crater, although even that translation is imperfect. Unlike an impact crater, it was not formed by a meteorite. Layers of softer rock gradually eroded beneath harder layers until the landscape collapsed and opened into the vast valley you see today.

Ramon Crater extends for around 40 km, reaches up to about 10 km across, and drops hundreds of meters below the surrounding cliffs.

The exposed rocks reveal geological layers of different ages and colors, which is why driving or hiking through the crater can feel like traveling through an enormous open-air geology museum.

Is Mitzpe Ramon Worth Visiting?

For many travelers, yes – particularly if you want to experience a side of Israel that feels completely different from its cities and historic sites.

Mitzpe Ramon is especially worth adding to your itinerary if you enjoy:

  • dramatic landscapes
  • hiking and outdoor activities
  • photography
  • geology
  • stargazing
  • desert wildlife
  • jeep tours
  • road trips
  • quiet destinations away from large cities

It is also a natural stop when traveling between central Israel and Eilat.

On the other hand, if you have only three or four days in Israel and are visiting for the first time, you may prefer to concentrate on Jerusalem and the country’s other major highlights. Mitzpe Ramon becomes much easier to justify on an itinerary of a week or longer.

How Long Should You Spend in Mitzpe Ramon?

A Few Hours

If you are passing through on the way to Eilat, you can still enjoy the crater.

Visit the Ramon Crater Visitor Center, walk along the rim, stop at one or two viewpoints and drive down into the crater before continuing south.

One Full Day

A full day gives you time for the Visitor Center, crater viewpoints, HaMinsara, Ramon Colors Route and either a short hike or jeep tour.

One Night – Recommended

For most international travelers, one overnight stay offers the best balance.

It allows you to experience sunset, see the stars after dark and enjoy the desert again the following morning without trying to squeeze everything into one long day.

Two Nights

Consider two nights if you want to take a longer hike, join both a jeep tour and stargazing experience, explore the surrounding Negev or simply enjoy the area at a slower pace.

How to Get to Mitzpe Ramon

Mitzpe Ramon sits directly on Route 40, the main road running south through the central Negev toward Eilat.

For most tourists, the easiest way to visit is by rental car or private transportation.

By Rental Car

A rental car gives you by far the most flexibility.

Although you can reach Mitzpe Ramon by bus, many attractions inside and around the crater are spread out, and public transportation is not designed for sightseeing between them.

With a car you can easily:

  • stop at viewpoints along Route 40
  • drive into Ramon Crater
  • visit HaMinsara
  • explore Ramon Colors Route
  • reach trailheads
  • combine Mitzpe Ramon with Sde Boker, Ein Avdat and Avdat
  • continue south toward Eilat

You do not need a 4×4 simply to visit Ramon Crater. Route 40 crosses the crater, and Ramon Colors Route is accessible to regular vehicles.

Some unpaved desert tracks, however, are suitable only for 4×4 vehicles. Never take a normal rental car onto a trail or road where the rental agreement or local signs prohibit it.

👉 Planning a longer road trip? See my Getting Around Israel guide for an overview of transportation options around the country.

By Public Transportation

Mitzpe Ramon is served by intercity buses, but public transport works best if your goal is simply to reach the town rather than explore the wider crater independently.

Travelers coming from Tel Aviv or Jerusalem will commonly travel via Be’er Sheva, while services also connect the Negev with destinations farther south.

Schedules change, so I recommend checking the latest journey shortly before traveling rather than relying on an old timetable or bus number.

Once in Mitzpe Ramon, the main crater-rim viewpoints and Visitor Center are accessible from town. Reaching some attractions farther inside the crater without a car is considerably less convenient.

Visiting on Shabbat

Regular intercity public transportation generally stops before Shabbat begins on Friday afternoon and resumes on Saturday evening.

If your trip falls over Shabbat, check the exact schedule in advance and avoid assuming that you will be able to reach or leave Mitzpe Ramon by bus.

Rental cars and pre-arranged private transportation remain much more flexible.

By Private Driver

Private transportation can be particularly useful if you want to visit Mitzpe Ramon without renting a car or want to combine several Negev attractions in the same journey.

For example, a route from Jerusalem or Tel Aviv can include stops at Sde Boker, Ein Avdat or Avdat before continuing to Mitzpe Ramon.

This can save a considerable amount of logistical planning when compared with trying to connect several desert locations by public transportation.

I provide pre-arranged private transportation throughout Israel, including trips to Mitzpe Ramon and the Negev.

Your journey can be planned around your itinerary, pickup location and the places you would like to visit along the way.

By Organized Tour

If you prefer not to drive, joining an organized experience can be another practical option.

Tours may concentrate on hiking, geology, desert scenery, jeep excursions or stargazing. Check the itinerary carefully, as some experiences start locally in Mitzpe Ramon rather than including transportation from Jerusalem or Tel Aviv.

Best Things to Do in Mitzpe Ramon & Ramon Crater

The area has enough to fill anything from a few hours to several days.

You also do not need to be a serious hiker. Several of the most memorable experiences require little or no strenuous walking.

1. Start at the Ramon Crater Visitor Center

If this is your first visit, the Ramon Crater Visitor Center is a good place to begin.

Located directly on the crater rim, the center introduces visitors to the geology and wildlife of Makhtesh Ramon and also incorporates the story of Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon.

The viewpoint outside is impressive in its own right and helps you understand the enormous scale of the landscape before driving down into it.

Important : As of August 2026 the Visitor Center is operating on a limited basis, and advance reservation is required. Check the official Israel Nature and Parks Authority website shortly before your visit, as arrangements may change.

Allow roughly an hour for the indoor experience, plus additional time for the viewpoint.

2. Walk Along the Crater Rim

You don’t have to descend into the crater to appreciate it.

The northern rim runs immediately alongside Mitzpe Ramon, making it easy to combine several viewpoints on foot.

The Albert Promenade follows part of the rim and offers wide views across the crater. Ibex are also frequently seen around Mitzpe Ramon, sometimes surprisingly close to the town.

Keep your distance and never feed wildlife.

3. Climb Har Gamal – Camel Mountain

Har Gamal, or Camel Mountain, is one of Mitzpe Ramon’s recognizable viewpoints.

Its name comes from the rock formation’s resemblance to a kneeling camel.

It is a relatively easy stop near town and gives you another perspective over the crater, particularly around sunset.

Wear suitable footwear and take extra care around exposed edges.

4. Drive Down into Ramon Crater

Looking into the crater from above is only half the experience.

Route 40 descends dramatically from Mitzpe Ramon into the crater and crosses the landscape before continuing south.

Even if you have only limited time, it is worth driving down rather than seeing the crater exclusively from the rim.

Inside, you’ll find colored rock layers, broad desert plains, dry river channels and unusual geological formations.

5. Drive Ramon Colors Route

Ramon Colors Route is one of the easiest ways to explore the geology of the crater without committing to a long hike.

The approximately 7 km route is designed for regular vehicles and passes through a former quarrying area that has been rehabilitated as a geological park.

There are parking areas and short stops along the way where you can get out and examine the landscape more closely.

The exposed rock reveals striking colors and geological layers that are easy to miss when simply driving along Route 40.

Allow at least an hour if you want to stop regularly rather than drive straight through.

Good for: families, photographers, non-hikers and independent travelers with a rental car.

6. Visit HaMinsara – The Carpentry

HaMinsara, often translated as The Carpentry, is one of the crater’s unusual geological attractions.

The site is named after angular stone formations that resemble pieces of sawn timber scattered across the ground.

A short walking route allows you to see the formations at close range without undertaking a demanding desert hike.

It makes an easy stop while driving through the crater and can be combined with Ramon Colors Route.

7. Take a Jeep Tour into the Crater

One of the best ways to explore beyond the paved roads is on a 4×4 jeep tour.

A local driver can take you along desert tracks inaccessible to normal rental cars while explaining the geology, wildlife and history of the area.

This is particularly worthwhile if you have only one day in Mitzpe Ramon but want to see more than the standard roadside viewpoints.

Tours vary from relatively short excursions to longer trips deeper into the desert.

Choose a jeep tour if:

  • you don’t have your own vehicle
  • you want to travel on genuine desert tracks
  • you prefer exploring with someone who knows the area
  • you want to understand what you are seeing rather than simply photograph it
  • you are visiting with children or travelers who may not want a long hike

8. Go Stargazing

Stargazing is one of the strongest reasons to spend a night in Mitzpe Ramon.

Ramon Crater has been recognized as an International Dark Sky Park, and the combination of desert air, relatively little artificial light and open horizons can produce spectacular night skies.

You can simply find an appropriate dark location and look up, but organized astronomy experiences add telescopes, explanations of stars and planets, and guidance from someone who knows the night sky.

Conditions vary enormously depending on clouds, visibility and the phase of the moon. If stargazing is one of the main reasons for your visit, check the moon phase before choosing your dates.

Desert nights can also be much colder than expected, even after a warm day.

9. Go Hiking in Ramon Crater

Hiking is one of the best ways to experience the silence and scale of Makhtesh Ramon, but desert hiking requires more preparation than an ordinary city walk.

The right trail depends heavily on the season, weather and your fitness level.

Parsat Nekarot & Ein Saharonim

This classic desert route combines canyon scenery, geological formations and the remains of an ancient Nabatean caravan station.

It is a good option for visitors looking for a genuine crater hike rather than a short roadside walk.

Mount Ramon & Karnei Ramon

For something different, the Mount Ramon area offers high-desert scenery west of Mitzpe Ramon.

One official circular route to the Karnei Ramon viewpoint is approximately 3 km and normally takes around 1.5–2.5 hours.

The trail is fully exposed to the sun and should not be treated as a summer midday activity.

Other Hiking Routes

There are many additional marked routes throughout the Makhtesh Ramon and Har HaNegev area.

Before choosing one, check:

  • distance
  • difficulty
  • trail markings
  • road access
  • weather forecast
  • flash-flood warnings
  • whether the route crosses a military training area
  • the amount of daylight available

Never choose a desert hike based only on a short online description.

10. Explore Mitzpe Ramon Town

Most visitors come for the crater, but leave some time for Mitzpe Ramon itself.

The town has developed its own small creative and desert-oriented community, particularly around the Spice Route Quarter, where former industrial buildings have been converted into workshops, studios and places to eat or drink.

Opening days and hours can vary, particularly around Shabbat, so check individual places before making a special journey.

Can You Visit Ramon Crater Without Hiking?

Absolutely.

You can have an excellent visit without undertaking a serious trail.

A relatively easy itinerary could include:

  1. Ramon Crater Visitor Center
  2. crater-rim viewpoints
  3. Har Gamal
  4. driving Route 40 into the crater
  5. HaMinsara
  6. Ramon Colors Route
  7. sunset from the rim

You can also add a jeep tour if you want to see more of the desert without walking long distances.

This makes Mitzpe Ramon suitable for families, older travelers and visitors who simply aren’t interested in hiking.

One Day in Mitzpe Ramon – Suggested Itinerary

If you have one full day, I would organize it approximately like this.

Morning – Visitor Center & Crater Rim

Begin at the Ramon Crater Visitor Center and allow time for the crater viewpoint.

Afterward, walk along part of the rim or visit Har Gamal.

Late Morning – Drive into Ramon Crater

Follow Route 40 down from Mitzpe Ramon into the crater.

Stop at HaMinsara and explore the short walking route.

Midday – Ramon Colors Route

Continue to Ramon Colors Route and spend time exploring the geological stops.

In warmer months, avoid planning a strenuous hike during the hottest part of the day.

Afternoon – Choose One Main Activity

Depending on your interests, choose:

  • a jeep tour
  • a marked desert hike
  • additional geological stops
  • time exploring Mitzpe Ramon

Sunset – Return to the Rim

Head back to Mitzpe Ramon for sunset over the desert.

Evening – Stargazing

If you are staying overnight, finish your day with an organized stargazing experience or enjoy the night sky from an appropriate dark location.

Two Days in Mitzpe Ramon

If you have two days, avoid simply adding more stops to the first day.

Use the extra time to slow down.

Day 1

Visitor Center → crater rim → HaMinsara → Ramon Colors Route → sunset → stargazing.

Day 2

Choose a longer hike or jeep tour in the morning, followed by lunch in Mitzpe Ramon.

You can then either spend another night or continue toward Eilat, Sde Boker or your next destination.

Where to Stay in Mitzpe Ramon

Staying overnight changes the experience considerably.

You gain access to sunset, sunrise and stargazing without having to drive several hours afterward.

Accommodation ranges from high-end desert hotels to guesthouses, hostels and camping.

Luxury

Mitzpe Ramon has luxury accommodation overlooking the desert for travelers who want to make the stay itself part of the experience.

This is particularly appealing for couples and special occasions.

Best for: crater views, resort facilities and a memorable desert stay.

Keep in mind: accommodation can become expensive during weekends, holidays and peak travel periods.

Mid-Range Hotels & Guesthouses

Smaller hotels and guesthouses offer a more affordable base while keeping you close to the crater rim and town center.

Best for: independent travelers who want comfort without resort-level prices.

Budget Accommodation

Hostels and simple guesthouses can make Mitzpe Ramon accessible to backpackers and travelers on longer trips around Israel.

Check the exact location if you are traveling without a car.

Camping

For the most immersive desert experience, camping is available in designated locations in the wider Ramon Crater area, including official campgrounds.

Camping can be excellent for stargazing, but desert temperatures can change sharply after sunset.

Never camp in an unauthorized location inside a protected nature reserve.

Best Time to Visit Mitzpe Ramon

There is no single perfect month, but the season makes a major difference to what you can safely and comfortably do.

Autumn – October to November

One of the best periods for hiking and outdoor activities as temperatures become more comfortable.

Winter – December to February

Daytime conditions can be excellent for desert hiking, but nights in Mitzpe Ramon can become very cold.

Bring warm layers even if the weather elsewhere in Israel feels mild.

Rain is relatively uncommon, but when it does occur, flash flooding can make desert routes dangerous.

Spring – March to April

Another excellent period for hiking and road trips.

Temperatures are generally comfortable, though hot days can already occur.

Summer – May to September

Mitzpe Ramon sits at a higher elevation and can feel more comfortable than lower desert areas, but exposed trails and the crater floor can still become dangerously hot.

If visiting during summer, concentrate outdoor activities around the early morning and late afternoon rather than planning demanding midday hikes.

Desert Safety: What You Need to Know

Ramon Crater is beautiful precisely because it is a large, exposed desert environment.

Treat it accordingly.

Check the Weather Before Hiking

Conditions in the desert can change quickly.

Do not hike during extreme heat, and avoid canyon or riverbed routes when flash-flood warnings are in effect – even if it is not raining where you are standing.

Rain falling many kilometers away can produce sudden flooding downstream.

Carry Plenty of Water

A small bottle of water is not enough for a desert hike.

The amount required depends on the route, weather and length of the hike, but longer desert routes can require several liters per person. For substantial desert outings, around 5 liters per person may be appropriate.

Carry more than you think you will need rather than relying on finding water along the trail.

Finish Before Dark

Plan hikes so that you are completely off the trail before nightfall.

Do not treat a hiking trail as a route to a stargazing location after dark.

For stargazing, use a suitable accessible viewing area or join an organized activity.

Stay on Marked Trails

Do not improvise shortcuts or follow unofficial tracks.

The landscape can look open and simple while making orientation surprisingly difficult.

Don’t Rely on Mobile Reception

Coverage can disappear in parts of the desert.

Download any maps or information you may need before leaving town.

Tell Someone Your Plans

For longer hikes, let somebody know where you are going and when you expect to return.

Respect Wildlife

Ibex and other desert animals are wild animals.

Do not approach, feed or leave food for them.

Check Current Park Alerts

Trail closures, weather warnings and access restrictions can change.

Check the Israel Nature and Parks Authority’s latest notices before leaving for a hike.

Visiting Mitzpe Ramon on Shabbat

Mitzpe Ramon can actually be an enjoyable place to spend Shabbat, but you should plan transportation and meals in advance.

Regular buses generally stop before Shabbat begins on Friday and resume after it ends on Saturday.

Some restaurants, shops and attractions may also close or operate reduced hours.

If you have your own rental car, you can still travel and explore independently, although individual attractions may have their own opening arrangements.

If you are relying entirely on public transportation, check your arrival and departure options before booking accommodation.

What to Combine with Mitzpe Ramon

One of the best ways to include Mitzpe Ramon in an Israel itinerary is as part of a Route 40 road trip through the Negev.

Several worthwhile attractions lie north of Mitzpe Ramon.

Sde Boker

Sde Boker is closely associated with David Ben-Gurion, Israel’s first prime minister, who chose to make his home in the Negev.

Nearby, the Ben-Gurion graves overlook the dramatic Tsin Valley.

It is an easy stop when traveling between Be’er Sheva and Mitzpe Ramon.

Ein Avdat National Park

Ein Avdat is one of the Negev’s most impressive desert canyons.

Springs support vegetation and wildlife within steep pale cliffs, creating a landscape very different from the open terrain of Ramon Crater.

Different walking routes are available, and there are route-specific last-entry times.

Advance reservation is currently recommended through the Israel Nature and Parks Authority.

If you intend to combine Ein Avdat with Mitzpe Ramon on the same day, start early rather than leaving the canyon until late afternoon.

ein avdat

Avdat National Park

A short distance farther south is Avdat, the remains of an ancient Nabatean city overlooking the desert.

The site formed part of the historic Incense Route that connected the Arabian Peninsula with Mediterranean ports.

Avdat combines archaeology with panoramic views and fits naturally into a Route 40 itinerary.

Advance reservation is also recommended through the official website.

Suggested Negev Route

For travelers driving south from Jerusalem or Tel Aviv, a particularly rewarding itinerary is:

Sde Boker → Ein Avdat → Avdat → Mitzpe Ramon

Stay overnight in Mitzpe Ramon and continue exploring Ramon Crater the following morning.

If you are traveling toward Eilat, you can then continue south along Route 40.

Prefer Not to Drive?

The individual stops are much harder to combine efficiently by public transportation.

A pre-arranged private driver allows the journey to be adapted to the attractions you actually want to visit rather than to bus schedules.

Plan Your Mitzpe Ramon Trip

Mitzpe Ramon is not a destination that needs a long checklist of attractions.

Its appeal comes from the landscape itself.

Stand on the crater rim, descend into the desert, take time to explore the unusual geology and stay long enough to see how dramatically the scenery changes as the sun goes down.

Whether you visit for a short stop on the way to Eilat or spend two days hiking and exploring the Negev, Makhtesh Ramon offers one of the most distinctive landscapes you can experience during a trip to Israel.
