Is There Still a Sherut from Ben Gurion Airport?

The Status of Shared Taxis to Jerusalem, Haifa, and Tel Aviv

Last updated: August 2026 by Moshe Barak — Israel travel and transportation expert with more than 20 years of experience helping international travelers navigate Israel.

No regular sherut shared-taxi service currently operates from Ben Gurion Airport to Jerusalem, Haifa or Tel Aviv. The former Nesher service to Jerusalem and Amal service to Haifa have been discontinued.

Travelers arriving at Ben Gurion Airport should now use the train, a scheduled bus where available, an official airport taxi or a pre-booked private transfer. The best choice depends on your destination, arrival time, luggage and whether you are traveling during Shabbat or a Jewish holiday.

Sherut taxis still operate on a limited number of routes elsewhere in Israel. However, these local route-based services should not be confused with the former door-to-door airport sheruts.

⚠️ Outdated information warning: Many older travel guides, university pages and forum discussions still advise travelers to look for Nesher or Amal sheruts outside the arrivals hall. These instructions are outdated and no longer apply.

The disappearance of the former airport sheruts does not leave travelers without practical options. Ben Gurion Airport remains well connected to Israel’s main destinations, but choosing the right alternative requires considering the route, operating hours, luggage and whether public transportation is available on your arrival date.

What Is a Sherut Taxi?

A sherut, also called a monit sherut, is a shared taxi that usually operates in a minivan. Traditional sheruts carry several unrelated passengers along an established urban or intercity route, normally at a lower cost than hiring a private taxi.

The former airport sheruts worked somewhat differently. They collected passengers traveling to the same city and dropped them at separate addresses, so the journey could involve waiting for the vehicle to fill and making several stops before reaching your destination.

A commercial company may still advertise a “shared airport shuttle.” This is not necessarily a traditional sherut route. It is usually a private service that must be booked in advance and may operate only at selected times or with a minimum number of passengers.

Is There Still a Sherut from Ben Gurion Airport to Jerusalem?

No. The former Nesher shared-taxi service between Ben Gurion Airport and Jerusalem is no longer operating.

For many years, Nesher transported arriving passengers from the airport to different addresses throughout Jerusalem. Because the service was widely used, it is still mentioned in older Israel travel guides and online discussions.

Travelers should no longer arrive expecting to find a Nesher desk or a shared minivan to Jerusalem. The principal current alternatives are the direct train, an official airport taxi and a pre-booked private transfer.

Is There Still a Sherut from Ben Gurion Airport to Haifa?

No. The former Amal sherut service between Ben Gurion Airport and Haifa has also been discontinued.

Amal previously provided shared transportation between the airport and Haifa. Some websites still display old telephone numbers, prices or booking instructions, but travelers should not rely on these details when planning a current journey.

When railway service is operating, the train is normally the main public transportation option. An official taxi or private transfer provides direct transportation to a hotel or private address.

Is There a Sherut from Ben Gurion Airport to Tel Aviv?

There is no regular traditional sherut route between Ben Gurion Airport and Tel Aviv comparable to the former services to Jerusalem and Haifa.

Travelers can instead use the train, an available bus, an official airport taxi or a private transfer. Some commercial companies may offer pre-booked shared shuttles, but these are private services rather than a regular sherut available automatically after landing.

Before reserving a shared shuttle, confirm its schedule, airport meeting point, waiting policy, drop-off area and total price.

What Should Travelers Use Instead of an Airport Sherut?

The best alternative depends on your destination and travel circumstances:

  • Train: Usually the least expensive practical option when railway services are operating. You may need additional transportation from the destination station to your accommodation.
  • Official airport taxi: Provides direct transportation without waiting for other passengers or booking a shared seat.
  • Private transfer: Offers a vehicle reserved for you, with the pickup arrangements and price confirmed in advance.

A private transfer is particularly practical for families, groups, travelers carrying several large suitcases and passengers arriving when public transportation is limited.

Is There a Sherut from Ben Gurion Airport on Shabbat?

No. The former airport sheruts to Jerusalem and Haifa do not operate during Shabbat – or at any other time – because the services have been discontinued.

Regular train services and most bus routes do not operate during the main Shabbat period. Exact stopping and resumption times vary by date and route, so travelers should check their specific journey in advance.

An official airport taxi or pre-booked private transfer will normally be the most straightforward option, although rental cars and limited public transportation may also be available in some circumstances.

Are Sherut Taxis Still Operating Elsewhere in Israel?

Yes. Limited route-based sheruts still operate in Israel, particularly in and around Tel Aviv. These shared minivans generally follow established urban routes similar to bus lines.

They are local transportation services rather than airport-to-hotel transfers. Routes and operating arrangements can change, so travelers should confirm current information before relying on a sherut for an important connection.
